Short Hair Styles for the Natural African American
By Yvonne Van Damme, eHow Contributor
Natural African American hair has specific challenges. It tends to be more coarse and dry than other types of hair. Also, due to the fact that it’s curly and not straight, the hair is brittle and breaks off more easily. Natural African American hair that has not been relaxed and has its natural texture can require a lot of attention. Many black women opt for short hair styles so that it’s easier to manage.
Bob
A bob hairstyle is a classic. There are multiple versions of the bob hairstyle to choose from, including a graduated bob and a curly bob. For natural African American hair, a curly and messy bob is ideal. The hair should be cut to about mid-neck length with layers throughout. The back of the hair is shorter and the hair then angles to the front, framing the face.
Curly
A short curly crop looks lovely with natural, black hair. This hair style is a longer version of the very short pixie cut. The hair is left a bit longer so that the natural curls are showcased. The hair should be cut in the general shape of the pixie cut, shorter in the back and on the sides, and left longer on top. Style the top and front of the hair so that it’s very curly.
Twists
Short twists are low maintenance and easy to style with natural hair. To create this hair style, the hair must be at least 3 inches long, but not much longer than that. Start with the front of the head and wrap two pieces of hair around each-other. Continue to do so all over your head. Twists are long-lasting and you will likely be able to wear this style for more than one or two days. Just touch them up by re-twisting every other day.
Retro
A wild, short and retro style that is reminiscent of a 1970s Afro is eye-catching. The current version is a bit more toned down. This hair style is short, 3 to 4 inches long around the whole head. To style, use styling cream and mousse to poof the hair up and off of the face. Use your fingers to create wild curls.
