Men’s hairstyles change as often and as drastically as trends in clothing. Long styles replace short styles and then mid-length styles come into vogue. However, men have many options for classic hairstyles, as well. Classic haircuts hardly ever go out of style, giving men a reliable foundation on which to base their overall look.
Short, shaggy haircuts are the most versatile of these classic cuts. They can be reshaped and combed to fit professional, casual, formal and trendy styles. A good shaggy cut also requires very little maintenance, slashing morning grooming to a minimum.
Short and Spiky
This style allows men to style their hair if they like or simply smooth it with a comb or even their hands. The cut leaves about an inch of hair all over the back and sides of your head and about 2 inches of hair on top. The uniform length makes your hair look like many different lengths since your head is round.
Men can smooth the top length flat on a lazy day or rub a small amount of gel, mousse or hair wax between their palms and through their hair. This makes the hair stick straight up for a casual look. You can push up just the front for a professional look or push it up and to one side for a trendy formal style.
Shag in the Eyes
This cut is short enough to be low-maintenance but long enough to be versatile. It reaches to the cheekbones in the front, the earlobes on the sides and curls slightly away from the nape of the neck in the back. Ask for a razor cut for this style; razor cuts cut the hair on very small angles, making your hair move and style more easily. Use gel or mousse on your fingertips to pull pieces of hair in different directions over your forehead and to smooth it over your ears and back of your head. This style looks best with no part; any part should be covered by hair meshing together in opposite directions.
Curly Shag
This style works best for men with textured hair. Many men with curly or wavy hair fight against it; this style erases that need. It is incredibly low-maintenance, requiring at most a little mousse to keep frizz away.
The cut leaves your hair the same length all over your head, about an inch or more. Style it by combing it gently with a wide-toothed comb and running damp fingers or a little mousse through the strands. Your hair should settle in roguish waves on your forehead and around your ears. Let the breeze blow it where it will.
